Grants
One quarter of all the UK's emissions of carbon dioxide (the key climate change gas) comes from household use of fossil fuels. Scottish householders have a vital role to play in lowering our greenhouse gas emissions, and in helping to reach Scotland's target of generating 40% of electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
There have been significant changes to the available grants for Biomass projects since April 2009. These are summarised below:
The Scottish Communities and Householder Renewables Initiative has closed for domestic and community grant applications. This scheme has been replaced by 2 separate schemes. These new schemes are very similar to the SCHRI scheme.
For community groups the new scheme is Communities and Renewable Energy Schemes (CaRES). This scheme is administered nationwide by Community Energy Scotland.
The most significant difference with this scheme is that the funding ceiling limit has been increased to £150,000.
For domestic customers the new scheme is Energy Saving Scotland-Home Renewables. Information on this grant scheme is provided by The Energy Saving Scotland Advice Centres on 0800 512 012.
Funding for householders is set at 30% of the installed cost, up to a maximum of £4,000.
The current grant schemes are scheduled to run until 2011 or 2013. It is unlikely that these schemes will be changed mid-term from their present structure, qualification criteria will remain the same.
